5 Semicircular canals Semicircular canals: : looks like a three dimensional pretzel Vestibular sacs: connects the canals with the cochlea, contain fluid that moves when the head rotates or tilts. This movement stimulates hair-like receptors, which sends messages to the cerebellum at the back of the brain.

6 Ian Waterman contracted a rare viral infection that destroyed the nerves that enable his sense of light touch and of body position and movement. People with this condition report feeling disembodied, as though their body is dead, not real, not theirs. With practice Waterman has learned to walk and eat-by visually focusing on his limbs and directing them accordingly. But if the lights go out, he crumples to the floor because light interacts with kinesthesis. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCwQuAIwAg&url=http%3A%2 F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DFKxyJfE831Q&ei=M6JXVLD4KYHcgwSTgoHgBQ&usg=AFQjCNFyA61xgKVXgqZlC- kg8RNU6pT1Lw&sig2=ziUGq_OM7q7Dqf5ljLCo9w&bvm=bv.78677474,d.cGU

7 Now close your eyes and you will probably wobble. Vestibular input (the sense of movement, centered in the inner ear). Any type of movement will stimulate the vestibular receptors, but spinning, swinging, and hanging upside down provide the most intense, longest lasting input. Do you fall over when trying to stand up straight? 2. Stand with your right heel in front of your left toes. Easy. 1.SPIN!
