History Find out about the effects of Roman settlement in Great Britain from printed sources, pictures and photographs, and a visit to Fishbourne Roman Palace. Identify reasons for, recall and describe the effects of the Roman Settlement in Britain. Explain the Boudicca revolt and why it is difficult to know what really happened. Recognise that the past is represented in different ways e.g. written, pictures, artefacts, and give reasons for this. To ask, research and answer their own questions on a historical topic, and select the appropriate sources to research from a selection provided by the teacher. English Phase 1: Compare a range of myths; analyse a quest myth, identifying the text structure and language features (6-7 days) Phase 2: Identify how settings impact on events in a quest myth; create an interactive story map to support planning a quest myth; use oral storytelling to plan a quest myth (7-8 days) Phase 3: Children write their own quest myth incorporating settings that provide a challenge and settings with characters that support the main character (6-7days) ICT Use a paint package to create Mosaic designs on screen. Use the internet to identify sources of evidence and evaluate them Art Investigating mosaic art during a visit to Fishbourne Roman Palace. The roles and purposes of artists, craftspeople and designers working in Ancient Rome. Observe and produce pattern and still life in their own mosaics. Record first hand observations of mosaics. DT have gained an understanding of ways in which structures can be made stable, recognising conflicting demands on the structure; have designed and made a frame for their mosaic. Cycle B 2013-14 7 Weeks Rationale The children will be learning about Ancient Rome through evidence in the environment and through artefacts and pictures. They will recognise that archaeologists learn about the past from the evidence that is left behind. Outcome Activity The children will dress in Roman costumes and in role they will attend a ‘Roman Style Banquet’ with food and entertainment, that they have researched, planned and prepared as part of their home learning and class activities. (Monday p.m. 9/12/13) Thinking Be able to solve problems in different situations using important skills such as planning and reviewing. Independence Ask questions to further their understanding. This half term, Autumn Class will be learning about the Ancient Romans The Hook A visit to Fishbourne Roman Palace The children will make frames for their own mosaics. The children will make clay tiles for their mosaics.(tesserae) Take part in an archaeological dig. Read and write Roman myth quests. Use ICT to support their research. Dress as Roman for our Roman Banquet December (afternoon) Look at Roman Armour and find out about Roman soldiers. Learn about how the Romans lived in Britain. Learn about the legacies of the Ancient Romans. The children will be learning about Ancient Rome through evidence in the environment and through artefacts and pictures. They will recognise that archaeologists learn about the past from the evidence that is left behind Cycle B 2013-14 7 Weeks Learn about key figures such as Boudicca and Julius Caesar.

Autumn Class’ Home Learning Project Design and make your own armour/clothing to wear at our Roman Banquet. The banquet will comprise of some simple Roman snacks that the children will have researched during the topic (although we will not be eating stuffed dormice) and the children will provide their own entertainment; performing their Roman myths.
