What is a prelude?

Would you say that the transition from the Texas area up to New York City has affected your work or your life in any way? Absolutely. In the book, Prelude to Bruise, the narrative certainly is a journey itself and there’s a sense of movement as “boy,” the character we see over the course of the poems, himself goes on a journey as he leaves home and ventures out into the world as he is stepping into a sense of who he is as a person. That definitely comes from my own life. I’ve always wanted to live in N.Y.C. I’ve always wanted to be a writer and I do feel like I’m living a version of that dream now. N.Y.C. is still in many ways a cultural capital and the community of writers and artists that I am able to have be a part of my life in a very ongoing, everyday way is just such a gift; it’s one of the reasons I’m so happy to be here.

Your Student Handbook Attendance Policy Students are to be at school and in class on time everyday. Parents/guardians and students share the responsibility for being at school on time. Daily attendance is critical to a student’s learning and academic success. NCAS Attendance Goal: Maintain an Average Daily Attendance of 95% or better.
10
Attendance Policy Absences If a student is absent due to an illness, doctor’s appointment, or family emergency, the parent/guardian should call the attendance number and inform the school of the reason for absence. Students may not call in an absence. If a parent/guardian does not call in to excuse a student’s absence, the absence will be marked as “unexcused” and the family will receive a phone call informing them of the absence. Students who are absent are responsible for all missed assignments. No assignments are ever automatically excused due to absence. It is the student’s responsibility to communicate with their teachers by collecting and completing all missed assignments. If a student misses class during the school day, they may not participate in field trips and after school activities including rehearsal, athletics practice and/or games, Beacons, arts performances, etc.

Attendance Policy Truancy According to DPS District Compulsory School Age Attendance Policies and Procedures 22-33-107: A student who is “habitually truant” means a child who has attained the age of seven years and is under the age of seventeen years having four unexcused absences from public school in any one month or ten unexcused absences from public school during any school year. Absences due to suspension or expulsion of a child shall be considered excused absences for purposes of this subsection (3). Families of students with 11 or more unexcused absences will receive written notice delivered by the Dean of Students and/or Social Worker. This is a warning for parents/guardians that the next step is truancy court. If student has already attended truancy court, no absences will be excused without official documentation or a doctor’s note.
12
Attendance Policy Number of Absences – Days: Actions & Consequences 1 Unexcused absence Phone call home from member of attendance team. 3 Unexcused or 5 Excused Absences Student is signed up for attendance intervention. (Please see attendance intervention notification) 5 Unexcused or 8 Excused Absences Letter sent home to inform families of poor attendance. 8 Unexcused or 11 Excused Absences Personal contact made by Dean of Students or Social Worker, attendance contract initiated. 11 Unexcused or 13 Excused Absences Home visit made by Dean of Students and/or Social Worker, who deliver written truancy warning. 12+ Unexcused or 15+ Excused Absences Formal referral to truancy court.
13
Attendance Policy Tardies Students who arrive late to class will be marked as such by their teachers in Infinite Campus. A tardy report will be processed each day. Students with new tardies will receive the appropriate consequence based on the tardy ladder. A student’s tardy record is cleared at the end of the 9-week grading period.
14
Attendance Policy Ditching Class “Ditching Class” is when a student misses an entire class period without a written and documented reason from a parent/guardian or NCAS staff member. All students suspected of ditching class will be referred to the NCAS Attendance Team. When a student ditches class, they will receive an unexcused absence.
15
Attendance Policy Leaving Campus During the School Day All students suspected of leaving campus during the school day will be referred immediately to the Dean of Students. If a student leaves campus and later returns, they will be searched by security before returning to class. All parents will be notified immediately if their student is thought to have, or found leaving campus unexcused. See “Ditching Class” for ladder of consequences.
16
Attendance Policy Hall Sweeps Hall Sweeps will be conducted periodically in the interest of ensuring that all students arrive to class on time. Students caught in a hall sweep will earn an automatic after school attendance intervention class. Tardies will be noted in Infinite Campus and apply to the tardy ladder (see “Tardies” section).
17
Attendance Policy Attendance Contracts Attendance reports will be ran weekly and shared with students and staff. Attendance contracts will also be initiated for students with habitual tardies, absences, and/or late arrivals. Attendance Contracts are monitored by the Attendance Team. Failure to abide by an attendance contract will result in referral to the court truancy officer.
18
Passes Hall Passes Students are expected to anticipate their needs and to plan ahead. In general, hall passes will not be written for students to take care of needs which should have been addressed before or after school, during passing periods or during lunch. All passes must be written in the student planner. If students do not have their own planner, no pass will be written. 1. The beginning 15 min and ending 15 of each class may NOT be used for bathroom breaks. 2. Students will bring their OWN planners to the faculty member for his/her signature. Students may NOT use another student’s planner as a pass.
19
Passes Library (LMC) Policy 1. Students must have a pass to the library or be with a teacher. 2. Students/classes must be in the library for research, assessment, or for checking out books. 3. If students exhibit inappropriate behavior, they will be sent back to class. 4. Students are responsible for any lost or damaged library books checked out on their name.
