Ohio The state capital is Columbus. The state tree is the buckeye. Ohio comes from an Iroquois word that means “Great Water.” The state flower is the scarlet carnation.

Pennsylvania The state capital is Harrisburg. The state bird is the ruffed grouse. Pennsylvania translates to “Penn’s woodlands.” Pennsylvania is one of the original 13 colonies (it entered the Union in 1787).

Maryland The state capital is Annapolis. The state flower is the black-eyed susan. Maryland means “Free State.” It is one of the original 13 states to join the Union in 1788.

Virginia The state capital is Richmond. The cardinal is the state bird. Virginia is also known as “Old Dominion.” It is one of the original 13 states (entered the Union in 1788).

Kentucky Frankfort is the state capital. The state flower is the goldenrod. The meaning comes from an Iroquois word that means “Land of Tomorrow.” It was admitted into the Union in 1792.
