What’s Missing? 4 In-depth view of student movement, within and in-and-out of district, throughout their high school career and its effect on who graduates. Critical Questions –How much movement is there really? –Where do students go when they leave? –How many students leave & do they come back? –What is our procedure for students leaving school?

Necessary Clarifications 5 Non-graduates are not the same as dropouts GraduateNon-GraduateDropout Definition: Students who completed all graduation requirements and earned a high school diploma Example: Student earned 220 credits, passed CAHSEE and completed all other graduation requirements Definition: Students who earned a special education certificate; earned a GED or passed the CHSPE; etc. Example: Student who passed away, exited school for medical issues, or transferred to another school Definition: Students who left prior to completing the year AND is not enrolled in another program leading toward a diploma OR grade 12 and did not complete Grad requirements (w/ exceptions) Example: Student who did not pass CAHSEE, transferred, but never enrolled, expelled and not enrolled at another school

What We Learned 11 We didn’t have as many dropouts as people perceived Roughly 38% (1,874) of grade 9 students from 2007 didn’t make it to senior year as a result of transfers to another CA school, move out of state, move out of US, etc. 52% of grade 9 students from 2007 graduated, but it doesn’t mean we have a 48% dropout rate Passing CAHSEE is not the biggest obstacle to graduating, credit completion is There is a lot of confusion on appropriate use of exit codes & their definitions

What We Did & Continue to Do 12 Hired district-level registrar Monthly meetings/trainings for Registrars and Assistant Principals of Guidance Continuing to assist with correct use of CALPADS exit codes Reemphasis and training on credit completion Monitoring credit completion at all grade levels Credit recovery beginning in grade 9
