Institutional Racism The collective failure of an organisation to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their colour, culture or ethnic origin. It can be seen or detected in processes, attitudes and behaviour which amount to discrimination through unwitting prejudice ignorance, thoughtlessness and racist stereotyping which disadvantage minority ethnic people. Culture The work encompasses the artistic and intellectual accomplishments, religious beliefs and values of people who share the same racial or ethnic origin and/or language. Discrimination A legal term which means treating a person less favourably than you would treat someone else

Culturally Competent Worker Is aware of the diversity that exists between cultures, within cultures and within families Is a worker who questions his/her own values and prejudices, assumptions and considers the impact of these on assessment and decision making Is able to adapt practices and skills to fit the cultural context of the child and family
