LESSON PLAN Topic: The Components of Computer Network No of Students : 38 Lesson No: 02 Level: 8 th

2 OBJECTIVES 1.Students will be able to define network 2.They can be able to define data transmission scenario/methodology 3.What is communication? 4.Mode of communication.

3 What is a Network? A network consists of 2 or more computers connected together, and they can communicate and share resources (e.g. information)

4 Why Networking? Sharing information — i.e. data communication Do you prefer these? Or this?

Benefits of Networking 1.File sharing 2.Flexible access 3.Security 4.Resource sharing 5.Communication 6.Software cost & management 7. Workgroup computing 8. Internet connection sharing 9. Multi-player games 10. Internet telephone service 11. Home entertainment

6 Sharing Hardware or Software Centralize Administration & Support E.g. print document E.g. Internet-based, so everyone can access the same administrative or support application from their PCs

Components of a Network Sender It is the device which sends data message / transmit data or information to other devices on the network Receiving It is a device which receive the data message and information transmitted by the sender

Communication It is a device which convert data into a form that can travel over the transmission medium and can be received by the receiving device or computer(dial up modem, NIC) Transmission medium The physical path on which data travels for communication is called communication medium(twisted pair,co-axial, fiber optic)

Two main categories: – Guided ― wires, cables – Unguided ― wireless transmission, e.g. radio, microwave, infrared, sound, sonar We will concentrate on guided media here: – Twisted-Pair cables:  Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) cables  Shielded Twisted-Pair (STP) cables – Coaxial cables – Fiber-optic cables Transmission Media

Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) Typically wrapped inside a plastic cover (for mechanical protection) A sample UTP cable with 5 unshielded twisted pairs of wires Metal Insulator

Shielded Twisted-Pair (STP) STP cables are similar to UTP cables, except there is a metal foil or braided-metal-mesh cover that encases each pair of insulated wires

Coaxial Cables In general, coaxial cables, or coax, carry signals of higher freq (100KHz–500MHz) than UTP cables Outer metallic wrapping serves both as a shield against noise and as the second conductor that completes the circuit

Fiber-Optic Cables An optical fiber cable is a cable containing one or more optical fibers that are used to carry light. The optical fiber elements are typically individually coated with plastic layers and contained in a protective tube suitable for the environment where the cable will be deployed. Different types of cable are used for different applications, for example long distance telecommunication, or providing a high-speed data connection between different parts of a building.

Class Evaluation Home Work Ask the question for evaluation after teaching each term and sub topic of lecture Search at least two other transmission medium and devices
