Getting Organized for the School Year Grades K-2 Kim Macca Erica Chasan Kindergarten Center

Getting Ready for the Day Points to consider: –Maintain healthy sleep habits (8-10 hours) –Eating a healthy breakfast –Establishing morning routines (ie. clothing displayed, backpack/lunch in consistent place) –*If possible* for K students, homework can be done in the morning.

Parent Homework Empty folders each night and look for important notices, newsletters Check homework books, agendas, class websites, etc. for information Review your child’s homework if it’s done under another adult’s supervision Keep district log-on information in a convenient location Be aware of the 6 day cycle to be prepared for Specials Be aware of extra help schedule (Grades 1 and up)

Helpful Household Routines Organization –Color code baskets or folders for each child –Use a visible calendar or bulletin board and use color coding to mark important dates –Consider hanging “in-boxes” for each child to place important papers into –Involve your child in the organization –Use a picture schedule for visual learners

Homework Happy Hour KNOW YOUR CHILD! Points to consider: –Does your child need a snack to energize the brain before beginning homework? –Do you have a quiet, organized area? –Does your child need a break before starting homework or during homework? –Try not to overbook after-school activities –Does your child have all supplies readily available? Does your child know where to find his/her supplies? –Remember to consider different times of the day
