CityMobil Resarch Center for transport and Logistics Francesco Filippi JIM-EV 2009 7 May 2009

CityMobil Integrated project co-funded by the sixth framework programme of the EC. Three major demonstration sites in the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain. 29 research partners out of 11 European countries. EC is funding € 11 million. Showcases, small demos and city studies.

CityMobil Objectives The CityMobil project is tackling the twin problems of congestion and pollution in Europe’s cities. It is developing innovative automated public transport systems which can take passengers exactly where they want to go, when they want to go.

The Three major demonstration Heathrow PRT Rome CTS Castellón TVRcas

Heathrow PRT The PRT system is connecting a car park to the new Terminal 5 with 3.9km of mainly elevated two parallel tracks 2m wide. There are four two-berth stations within the park. BAA intend to roll PRT out to serve the whole north side of the airport, where the existing Terminals 1, 2 and 3 will be redeveloped into two new Terminals.

Rome CTS Rome is building a new exhibition centre to replace the old one inside Rome. It will be located in the direction of Fiumicino airport 16 km away from the city centre, along the airport highway and railway link. In front of the exhibition gates are a car-park with about 2500 car-slots and a railway station about 500 m away.

Objectives To improve visitors' accessibility to the buildings, for people coming both by car and by train. To eliminate the shuttle, which would be needed to serve the farthest car-slots.

Castellón TVRcas (Transporte en Vía Reservada de Castellón), The objective of the Castellón Demonstrator is the implementation of a hybrid transport system connecting the cities of Castellón – the university and city centre – and Benicassim, at the seaside. The system is structured around two reserved corridors with more than 40 kilometres.

The system On this platform: an hybrid system of guided bus/tramway a railway-based solution with the flexibility, adaptability and smaller costs of a road- based system. a reserved platform combined with shared infrastructure. at intersections, the bus/tramway will be given priority over the private traffic.

The vehicle The vehicles will be powered through a tramway catenary, having in addition another secondary power supply system to be used in the historical centre of the city. A bus is generally approximately 2.5 m wide, but a bus lane is usually 3.75 m or even 4 m wide to allow for this lateral movement. A guided bus system, provides opportunities to implement dedicated bus ways where road space is in short supply and, where conventional bus lanes could be impractical. The automated docking - to improve physical access to the bus by minimising the vertical and horizontal gaps between the bus stop and the bus.
