1 Good Morning!!! 1.NVC 2.Vietnam Dinner Table Discussion – Preparation Time – “Socratic” Seminar Essential Question: How did different groups of people feel about the major events of the 1960s?

2 So… how did American families feel about the war in Vietnam?

3 Welcome to the Smith Household, 1971 – You are a having dinner at the Smith house. During this time, the country is divided between Pro and Anti-War, Hippies and the Silent Majority, the rich and the poor. This is something that the Smiths will be discussing at dinner because they are very interested in both foreign and domestic policy. – You will be assigned a role to play. As you get to know your character, think about the following questions: – 1. Should the U.S. continue to be involved in the war in Vietnam? – 2. What would victory mean in the war? – 3. How were America’s founding ideals influenced/affected by the war? – Use the packet and pages 675-679 to answer the questions based on your character’s POV

4 Step 1: Review background information from your class notes and textbook. Step 2: Examine evidence packet. Identify quotes and instances that would support your character’s beliefs. Step 3: Prepare arguments and answers to the central questions of the activity using the graphic organizer. Simulation Procedures: Step 4: Listen closely as each dinner table participant makes an opening remark. Step 5: Through questioning and discussion, draw out information from the other participants. Step 6: Questions for discussion—1. Should the U.S. continue to be involved in the war in Vietnam? 2. What would victory mean in the war? 3. How were America’s founding ideals influenced/affected by the war? Pre-Dinner Preparation:

5 Character Name 1. Father- Harold Smith Conservative anti-Communist “head of the house,” served in WWII and has fond memories of fighting the Nazis 2. Mother- Lucille Smith The “Good Housewife” of the 1960s, though she recently read Betty Friedans’s Feminine Mystique 3. Grandpa- George Smith An old radical and communist from the 1920s-1930s that protested World War I 4. Older Son- John Smith Joined the army, went to West Point, just finished his first tour of duty in Vietnam 5. Younger Son- Tommy Smith Admires both his older brother John’s war stories, as well as sister Debbie’s protest stories. Has just been drafted… 6. Daughter- Debbie Smith Hippie that goes to UC Berkeley, she is a big supporter of Women’s Liberation 7. Guest- Ly Qui Chung A South Vietnamese exchange student now living in America as a refugee 8. Guest- Sam Young Debbie’s boyfriend from Berkeley, African- American member of SNCC

7 Group Roles EVERY GROUP MEMBER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR UNDERSTANDING THE ARGUMENT AND EVIDENCE AND SUPPORTS YOUR PERSPECTIVE! – Actor: participates in the dinner table discussion and relates the group’s character to the class – Historian: takes notes and masters the historical information/evidence that supports the groups character and can assist the actor during the discussion – Artist: creates a name tag for the actor and any other props that fit the character – Script Writer: creates some scripted lines for the actor to say that fits the character’s personality
