2 World War I  Causes:  M -militarism  A -alliances  I -imperialism (causes tension and competition)  N -nationalism (causes disunity between competing nation-states)  Destructive new technology  Trench warfare  Technology + trench warfare = high casualties  Wilson’s 14 Points-  Promote peace between nations

3 Bolshevik Revolution  Led by Lenin  Russia becomes organized into local republics (aka soviets ) that are controlled by one central government

4 Global Depression  Caused by:  Overproduction  Stock market crash  Results in unemployment  Fixed by:  FDR  New Deal  Beginning of WWII

6 Cold War-USSR/USA  After Yalta Conference, Stalin maintains control of Eastern Europe and makes them Satellite Nations to protect the Soviet Union  “Iron Curtain”- Soviet Union is shielding itself from rest of Europe and continent is divided  USSR has a communist economy-gov’t controls all aspects of production  USA has free market economy and individual rights  NATO vs. Warsaw Pact  Gorbachev lessens tensions  Glasnost and perestroika

7 Cold War-Asia  Korean Conflict  Starts when Communist North invades Democratic South  UN intervention  Cease-fire  US uses policy of containment to justify intervention in Vietnam and Korea

8 Communism-China  Nationalists in power after overthrow of Qing dynasty  Nationalist gov’t weakened after years of civil war and rebellion  Mao Zedong becomes leader of Communist Party in China and is backed by the Soviet Union  Eventually, Mao and the Communists take control of China  Very strict government  Ex. Handling of Tiananmen Square

9 Modern History  Conflict continues in the Balkans  Bosnia/Serbia  Conflict erupts in the 1990s; US and NATO send in peace-keeping forces  UN helps minimally  Arab-Israeli conflicts  Israel created in 1948  Palestinians want homeland  US supports Israel  Causes many conflicts  Increasing trends of globalization and interconnectedness  9/11 leads to invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan
