Rational Numbers More information for CAR BUYING TODAY

Prices Anyone??? STUDENT LEARNING Decimals and Percents (no calculator) –Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing –Figuring tipping rates and store discounts based on 10% (moving decimal left one place) Compound Interest Formula Using Excel and PowerPoint Using the Internet to gather data and using payment calculators to explore scenarios

What Else Do We Know? Some Questions I had students consider… Favorite Colors? What do the extra’s really cost?? *what is a sample price range you saw (low to high)? Monthly payment? Who’s going to pay off their car in one year? How much money do people make anyway?

Your Grade Overall Pre-test:16 pts Post-test:64 pts Worksheets (5)40 pts (8pts each) PowerPoint (rubric)30 pts TOTAL UNIT POINTS: 150

Your Presentation Graded by: Mathematics Assessment Rubric 8 slides minimum 2 graphics 1 Excel chart A math example 2 Things you learned

What was Actually Learned? Move the decimal 2 places to the left to change percents to decimals Move the decimal 1 place left to figure 10% of a given number Excel charting was a success PowerPoint presentations and use of graphics and Excel charts went great! Students did get better at figuring decimals by hand and using a calculator to figure out compound interest and other car information __

Using Percentages More questions for students… Standard Tipping ?? ____________ Do people in the Imperial Valley leave tips? Is it common with those you know? Compound Interest Formula: __________ Explain the formula: How do you figure a 25% discount in your head?

Students worked hard to learn… Tricks to… Multiplying decimals Subtracting / Adding and dividing decimals

Excel Charting of Final Results:

Reflection on Student Data Overall, growth in each test category The initial area of regression was in decimal addition and subtraction. This was attributed to student carelessness. The last area of concern was the lack of growth in graphing. I did not cover enough information on this area. The questions concerned graphing by hand and ensuring accuracy in scaling the x and the y axis. Students tended to write given numbers on the axis rather than consider scale.

My Personal Growth Use of an LCD projector was completely new!!! As well, I was able to use a laptop, a scanner and Excel and PowerPoint to put it all together. I learned a great deal in Excel and what graphs effectively. Students really enjoyed the variety and I enjoyed teaching a specific area of mathematics from a different perspective!!!
