LETSI is an international non-profit federation committed to open standards for elearning systems. LETSI Technical Roadmap Committee Meeting Agenda - July 13, 2010 Architecture: Beyond Content Portability Runtime Web Services for Learning Joint study group with the IEEE LTSC Three new projects

3 LETSI Roadmap Paper - Summary  The content portability model impedes adoption of elearning advances (immersive, intelligent, collaborative, mobile,...).  In the future, complex, web-hosted learning activities and applications will share data with enterprise LMSs and with each other.  LETSI is following an incremental, market- driven approach, starting with a service- oriented transport mechanism for AICC CMI and ADL SCORM data.  The content portability model impedes adoption of elearning advances (immersive, intelligent, collaborative, mobile,...).  In the future, complex, web-hosted learning activities and applications will share data with enterprise LMSs and with each other.  LETSI is following an incremental, market- driven approach, starting with a service- oriented transport mechanism for AICC CMI and ADL SCORM data. 3

4 Content Portability Across LMSs Create a Lesson Export as a Package 4 LMS Manage Entitlements Manage Learners, Grades Manage Content Deliver Lesson in Browser Manage Session Track Student Progress Create lesson plans, Make learner assignments Create custom lessons

5 Content Portability Isn’t Enough 5  Some teachers & learners don’t have an enterprise LMS.  Innovative content isn’t portable. Publishers want to offer complex learning activities and advanced apps and services.  The innovation cycle is tied to enterprise software vs. web software, where barriers to adoption are lower and exploring new products is less costly and less risky.  Some teachers & learners don’t have an enterprise LMS.  Innovative content isn’t portable. 6 6 Complex Learning Activities 6  Successful prototypes and pilot projects, but broad adoption remains problematic  Immersive: exploration and rehearsal  Multi-learner: teams, collaborative learning  Intelligent: agents, observers, guides  Configurable: scenarios, roles, initial conditions  Mobile: just in time, exploration, disconnected  Real-time: monitoring and coaching  Informative: evidence-based assessment data  Successful prototypes and pilot projects, but broad adoption remains problematic  Immersive: exploration and rehearsal  Multi-learner: teams, collaborative learning  Intelligent: agents, observers, guides  Configurable: scenarios, roles, initial conditions  Mobile: just in time, exploration, disconnected  Real-time: monitoring and coaching  Informative: evidence-based assessment data

7 Web-Based Elearning 7  Hosted learning activities of increasing complexity from publishers  Web apps for teachers: find, preview, customize, plan lessons, make assignments, observe students, coach in real time, track progress, recommend,...  Apps for managers, parents, private tutors  Teachers & SMEs can publish new lessons to the web, like publishing photos to Flickr  Hosted learning activities of increasing complexity from publishers  Web apps for teachers: find, preview, customize, plan lessons, make assignments, observe students, coach in real time, track progress, recommend,...  Apps for managers, parents, private tutors  Teachers & SMEs can publish new lessons to the web, like publishing photos to Flickr

8 LETSI’s Contribution  Hosted learning activities and innovative web apps can be introduced in parallel with the current LMS-based architecture.  What is needed is a set of abstract web services and data models for secure inter- application data exchange across the net.  LETSI’s first project created a new Internet transport mechanism for AICC CMI and ADL SCORM data.  Hosted learning activities and innovative web apps can be introduced in parallel with the current LMS-based architecture.  What is needed is a set of abstract web services and data models for secure inter- application data exchange across the net.  LETSI’s first project created a new Internet transport mechanism for AICC CMI and ADL SCORM data. 8

9 LETSI Runtime Web Services  Phase 1 spec available. Developer’s Guide and code samples also available on wiki.  Currently implementing and testing  LMS: Rustici’s SCORM Cloud, Booz Allen Hamilton’s Atlas Pro, Meridian’s Global LMS  Content: Boeing, ECS, IAI, OutStart, Imedia.it, Pipwerks, Wise Learning Solutions.  More content testers needed, especially developers of out-of-browser, immersive, intelligent, and/or mobile learning activities.  Phase 1 spec available.
