2 Characteristics of totalitarian states / totalitarianism (see p. 441) rule by single party dictatorship has an ideology (set of beliefs) for people to follow state comes before individual; citizens expected to obey & individual rights mean little censorship of media extremely nationalistic dynamic leader  viewed as father-figure/godlike police/military terror used to silence critics indoctrination & propaganda  use technology to reach the masses
