Eisenhower – led American forces  May of 1943 Rommel’s forces were defeated

Fighting in Italy  From North Africa, the Allies moved north across the Mediterranean Sea to attack Italy  Italy was the weakest of the Axis Powers  People in Italy had turned against Mussolini and the Fascists and did not like the Nazis  Italians joined in and fought against the Germans  Hitler’s troops went to Italy to fight the Allies  Allied forces won – drove Nazis out of Italy

War in the Pacific  Spring 1942, Allies move into Pacific Ocean  Aircraft carrier within 700 miles of Japan  Sent 16 American bombers to Tokyo, Japan and bombed factories, naval bases, and railroad yards there  The Japanese were shocked – No enemy had ever attacked their homeland  Japanese then decided to push closer to U.S. territory in the Pacific Ocean

The Battle of Midway  June 4, 1942 American planes attacked Japanese planes  Americans intercepted Japanese messages and knew where the Japanese planes would be  Japanese were caught by surprises and suffered great loses  The Battle of Midway was the first big defeat for Japan

Island Hopping in the Pacific  Japanese held many islands in the Pacific Ocean  Americans realized if they captured these islands, they could use them to attack other Japanese bases  This plan was called island hopping  Amphibious landings by Marines  Land, sea, and air forces worked together for the invasions  Islands that were attacked were used by the Allies for air and supply bases to support other attacks  American forces were pushing back Japanese forces on these islands by 1943- 1944
