Speaking and writing Work in pairs. Would you like to read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer? Why/ Why not? Think of your favourite great book or choose a book you’d like to read. Use an encyclopaedia or the Internet to help you if necessary. Now complete the table in Activity 3 with details about your favourite great book.

Write a passage about your favourite great book. Use the passage in Activity 2 and your notes in Activity 6 to help you. My favourite great book is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. It’s a story about a young boy… Work in pairs. Talk about your favourite book.

Learning to learn Noticing words that are similar or repeated will help you to understand the theme of passage or a book. There are many words and phrases about adventure in the description of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, for example: exciting adventures, runs away, goes looking for treasure, gets lost. These words show us that the story will be exciting.
