Contents: Ionization cooling Overview of MICE Status of MICE Step IV Measurement programme Preparation for Step V Conclusions
3
Ionization cooling The status of the construction of MICE Step IV
4
Ionization cooling principal: Neutrino Factory muon front-end: – Optimisation requires: Bunching, phase-rotation, and Ionisation-cooling Neuffer, Rogers
5
Exponential decrease in normalised emittance: Competition between: – dE/dx [cooling] and MCS [heating] Optimum: – Low Z, large X 0 – Tight focus – H 2 gives best performance Ionisation cooling formalism:

Staged implementation:
9
Status of MICE Step IV The status of the construction of MICE Step IV
10
Step IV; requirements: * All procurement underway. Components for structure ~95% delivered to RAL.
11
Infrastructure:
12
Spectrometers: Both solenoids have: – Met acceptance criteria – Completed field mapping – Been delivered to RAL Upstream solenoid: – Tracker has been installed in solenoid – “Tracker module” installed in MICE Hall Downstream solenoid: – Tracker installation in progress – Shared space with FC#2 commissioning – D/s “tracker module” to be installed in the MICE Hall August 2014
13
Focus coil: Focus coil #1: – “Solenoid mode”: Trained to full current – “Flip mode”: “Just” reached nominal current: – Estimate that stable operation at 11%—15% de-rated current – This is sufficient to support Step IV programme – Module installed in MICE Hall Focus coil #2: – Received last fall; Cold-leak Returned to vendor for diagnosis and repair Now returned to RAL with repair complete – Re-commissioning of module underway
14
Partial return yoke: Reduce stray magnetic fields in the MICE Hall and ISIS control rooms to < 5 G Substantial civil construction: – South side (“behind” experiment) must be installed before superconducting solenoids; Procurement underway: – Contracts let in UK and US – 95% of parts for support structure have arrived at RAL
16
Interleaved with commissioning.

Preparations for Step V The status of the construction of MICE Step IV
21
Step V overview: Focus coil #2: – Re-commissioning underway RFCC module: – Two components: Coupling coil: – Met acceptance criteria; – RF cavities: Production well in hand; Remaining item couplers, in fabrication Partial Return Yoke: – Substantial civil construction project: Conceptual design complete; Moving to detailed design phase RF power: – Amplifier has been demonstrated: At 2 MW in test stand; and At 500 kW in MICE Hall Second LH2 system: – Procurement will start in time for it to be ready for Step V Second LH2 absorber vessel: – Being prepared for shipment to RAL from Osaka
22
Conclusions The status of the construction of MICE Step IV
23
Conclusions: All components required for Step IV are at RAL; – PRY production underway; – Confident that construction of MICE Step IV will complete Spring 2015. Data taking to date indicates: – Instrumentation performs to specification; – MICE Muon Beam performs to specification. Step IV data taking will start Q1/Q2 2015 Preparations for Step V well advanced: – Coupling magnet and prototype cavities have met specification: First production magnet being commissioned – Schedule for expedited completion of the MICE programme at Step V under development Collaboration poised to begin the study of ionization cooling
