2 Beginning of colonialism 35 000 years ago – from Asia through Bering Strait – Native Americans 1000 y. ago – Icelandic Vikings, no permanent settlements October 12, 1492 – Christopher Columbus (Columbia District ) ships: the Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria – the Bahamas Islands Amerigo Vespucci (America) the New World = a colonial land for Western Europeans (wealthy land, religion, new life – fur, corn, potatoes, tobacco)
