5 5 Hook: p.85-89 The hook is part of your introduction 1.use an anecdote 2. use a riddle 3. use fragment technique 4. use quotations 5. use a shocking statement

6 Anecdote A short story within an introduction to make the point clear. Example: Sally got out of bed, and looked at the alarm clock. She was running late! She would have to hurry to catch the bus. This was one of those days that she was glad that her school had a uniform policy…she wouldn’t have to waste much time picking out an outfit.

7 Riddles Get your reader’s attention with a challenging thought. What’s plain, and boring? What makes all students in a school building look the same and lose their individuality? If you guessed UNIFORMS, you’re correct!

8 Fragment technique Uses 3 short fragments to create an image. Example: A brand new fishing pole, a bucket of worms, and a warm spring day! These things are all useful to catch a big big fish.

9 Quotations Conversational “Mom, I’ve decided to become a soldier!” Famous Quote "War is nothing without a solider to fight it." - Tom Cruise

10 Shocking statements Provides statistics or facts that startles readers to pull them into your story. Example Can you believe that over 90% of students at our school don't like the school lunches, but only 5% take the time to make their own lunch?

14 14 TOEFL Writing Question 2: Independent Task Essay based on your own personal experience and ideas. Rang of topics – politics, health, economy, business, education, the environment, social issues 30 minutes, 300+ words long. Introduction Body: main part of the essay - should give your reasons with details that support your opinion. Conclusion: restate your view and summarize the reasons you gave to support it.

15 15 TOEFL Writing Question 2: Independent Task Grading: organization and language use. Development is how much support do you give to your opinion. Did you give details, examples and reasons? For organization, does your essay make sense? Language use covers grammar, spelling, vocabulary, word choice and sentence structure. Show a range of vocabulary and sentence types.

27 27 Some DOS and DON’Ts Do: Divide into 5 paragraphs Have a thesis statement in your introduction Come up with 3 main points to support your argument—these will be your 3 body paragraphs Have a conclusion that contains a clincher statement Come up with a catchy title Don’t Begin with “hello my name is___ and I’m going to write about____” Take out the word I (instead of I think we shouldn’t wear uniforms say “Uniforms shouldn’t be required” Be unclear. 28 28 Peer Review What is their hook? Circle it. What is their thesis? Circle it. What are their topic sentences? Circle them. What is their topic? Write it. What is their opinion about the topic? Write it. Give them feedback! Help them to correct spelling, or make something more clear.

29 Journal 1 Do you prefer to shop online or at a real store? Write a short essay comparing and contrasting the experience of shopping at these two different kinds of stores. Use specific reasons and examples to illustrate the stores' similarities and differences. Write 250+ words and make sure there is a thesis, introductory sentence, and concluding sentence

She thought it was a nice idea to nicely phone her nice friend Chris so that after their nice walk they could go for a nice coffee in one of the nice cafes which were near the edge of the nice town. The nice neighborhood was nicely famous for nice souvenirs.

32 A Nice Story: Example It was a fine spring day so studious Mary decided to go for a brisk walk in the botanical park near her 5 star hotel. She thought it was an excellent idea to suddenly phone her best friend Chris so that after their power walk they could go for an authentic coffee in one of the traditional cafes which were near the edge of the Italian town. The local neighborhood was especially famous for coffee-related souvenirs.

33 A Great Story It was a great great day in the great countryside in the great land of greatness. Two great friends decided to greatly eat some great great dishes. However there was a great great man blocking their way. They had to speak to him greatly to greatly calm him down. After several great minutes the great man greatly backed away and greatly said “sorry to disturb you”. The great friends were grateful and greatly continued their great day.

35 35 Reminder Assignments: You will write 4 essays and make a portfolio. 1. Remembering an Event (550-650 words) Something that happened to you. An interesting event that you remember clearly. 2. Writing a Profile (550-650 words) You will describe something or someone. 3. Proposing a Solution (650-750 words) You will discuss a problem and explain how to fix it 4. Justifying an Evaluation (550-650 words) You will give evidence to support a decision. 5.Portfolio You will choose 5 journal entries to put in your portfolio. 6. Journal Entries These will be given by the instructor. They will cover various topics.
