Informal Fallacies (The Top 3 Informal Fallacies Homo Sapiens Commit) Introduction to Logic Mr. Jeffrey V. Estores 2010-2011, 1 st sem, 2 nd term

outline Ad Hominem Post Hoc, ergo Propter Hoc Ad Misericordiam

Ad Hominem ¤ Disputing an argument by criticizing its source. Hey Maria! I think you should not scold your student in front of the whole class. Hey to you too! Who are you, a mere construction worker, to lecture me, a Ph. D. in Psychology?

Post Hoc, ergo Propter Hoc ¤ Just because two things happened around the same time doesn’t mean one caused the other. Why is that Amber? Tsek..tsek.. Patrick, that’s not good… not good at all. A black cat just jumped over you! So? 2 years ago, a black cat jumped over me. Then, bad things started to happen. I started to lose heavily in my gambling… then when I was broke, my two mistresses left me… then, the bank got my house and all my properties. You see Patrick it all started when that black cat jumped over me. It will happen to you too. O M G! What shall I do? Ex.: Consider this incident between Patricio, a.k.a. Patrick and Ambrocio, a.k.a Amber.

Ad Misericordiam ¤ When an appeal to evidence is replaced by an appeal to pity, mercy, or sympathy.

“Critical Thinking is as necessary as breathing. It is the element that makes us who we are – being humans. Without it we are nothing but MINDLESS BRUTES.”

THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS
