Growing bacteria Where do you think we can find microbes? List as many places as you can think of.

Objectives Understand why it is important to follow very strict safety procedures when growing microbes Follow the safety procedure to inoculate agar plates

Agar plates This is an agar plate. It contains a jelly with all the nutrients for bacteria to grow. You can get different colour agar plates, these are designed specifically for certain types of microbe.

Inoculating Plates Cut out the pictures and put them in the order you think they should go Don’t stick them down until you have checked them with me.

Safety Why do you think it is important that we follow such a strict safety procedure? To avoid growing any dangerous bacteria To avoid contamination To avoid getting any bacteria where we don’t want it

Set up your plates Divide your plate into 2 sections and place milk on 1 side and something from the lab on the other DO NOT BREATH, SNEEZE OR COUGH ON THE PLATE OR TOUCH IT WITH FINGERS Label and seal your plate properly

Results Draw your plate into your book so it takes up half a page. Label it as yours is, ready to draw in your results next lesson Make a prediction about what you think you will see when we look at the plates
