2 China Care Mission “The China Care Foundation is dedicated to saving the lives of medically fragile orphaned children in China. Founded in 2000 by Matt Dalio, a determined teenager, China Care is also committed to empowering young people to use their abilities and creativity to help improve the lives of children in need.”

3 UC China Care Mission Our primary goals at the moment are: fundraising to sponsor full medial surgeries and treatments for orphans in China suffering from serious and life-threatening conditions and providing mentorship to Chinese children adopted into non-Chinese families, offering them an environment to learn and appreciate their birth-heritage.

4 PlayGroup Goal To increase children’s awareness of, and appreciation for, their Chinese language and cultural heritage, and to provide a venue where adoptive families can meet and network. Playgroup activities focus on children making new friends and identifying with/learning more about their Chinese culture.

5 Tentative Schedule 2012 Our winter quarter: January 3 rd – March 17 th Playgroup/mentorship program dates: Every 2 weeks on SUNDAYS Sunday, January 15 th Sunday, January 29 th Sunday, February 12 th Sunday, February 26 th Each session is approximately 2 hours long at the University of Chicago campus

6 PlayGroup Logistics Ages: 8 and under Arrival, Designated Activity, Clean up -- 1 hour Snack Time -- 15-20 min Story Time/Educational-- 30 min

7 Activities! -Make Lanterns -Calligraphy -Make food/snacks, i.e. dumplings -Make Beijing Opera Masks -Make window decorations -Make shadow puppets -Sing Chinese songs -Watch movie episodes i.e. Monkey King

8 Mentorship This program pairs a China Care club member with an adolescent child who was adopted from China and aims to increase the children's awareness and appreciation for their Chinese cultural heritage. Ages: 8 and above Possible activities: Chinese language learning; reading/doing projects on facets of Chinese culture together with student partner; field trips Strong commitment required from mentees to attend all 4 program dates
