3 Farewell the Tea board with your gaudy attire,
Ye cups and saucers that I did admire; To my cream pot and tongs I now bid adieu; That pleasure’s all fled that I once found in you… No more shall my teapot so generous be In filling the cups with this pernicious [evil] tea, For I’ll fill it with water and drink out of same, Before I’ll lose Liberty that dearest name… The verses above come from a colonial poem entitled “A Lady’s Adieu to Her Tea-Table.” Read and answer the following question: 53. Why do you think this poem might have been written and distributed? To gain support for women’s right to vote To get people to drink more tea To explain to colonists what liberty means To boycott British tea

4 Read them and answer the following question:
. . . When you assemble a number of men to have the advantage of their joint wisdom, you inevitably assemble with those men all their prejudices, their passions, their errors of opinion, their local interests and their selfish views. From such an assembly can a perfect production be expected? It therefore astonishes me, sir, to find this system approaching so near to perfection as it does. . . Thus I consent, sir, to this Constitution, because I expect no better, and because I am not sure that it is not the best. The opinions I have had of its errors I sacrifice to the common good. —Henry D. Gilpin, Ed., the Papers of James Madison (New York, 1841) The words above were used by Benjamin Franklin to urge his fellow delegates to the Constitutional Convention to adopt the Constitution. Read them and answer the following question: 61. Why did Franklin support a Constitution that he felt was not perfect? He felt that his opinion was more important than the common good. He believed that in a diverse nation absolute perfection would not be possible. He felt the Revolutionary War was a mistake. He thought the Constitutional Convention could do better.
