What is meant by growth? What is meant by development? The skills we learn as we get older. Physical development Physical development of the body includes gross and fine motor skills, coordination of movement and the development of the senses. Look at the images below. Physical development: motor skills
Gross motor skills involve large muscle movements such as kicking a ball. Fine motor skills involve smaller, precise muscle movements such as holding a pencil or tying a shoe lace. Physical development: the senses
Sensory development involves sight, touch, taste, hearing and sight. Sensory skills become more finely tuned with age and then decrease in old age. Language development Language is a feature of intellectual development. The rate at which language is acquired varies between individuals but follows the same development stages. Emotional development
Emotional development is closely linked to social development and involves the development of feelings about yourself and about others. How might feelings develop over time? Click on the images to find out more. Basic emotions about ourselves such as hunger, tiredness and security are expressed simply e.g. through crying, smiling. More complex emotions about ourselves and others emerge e.g. likes, dislikes, shyness and guilt and can be expressed through language and actions. Emotional development: self-concept
Another feature of emotional development is self-concept. This is a combination of the general idea we have of ourselves (self-image) and how we feel about ourselves (self-esteem). Social development: socialisation
