Childhood -He was born in 1923 in Myra, West Virginia. Had 4 siblings.
Loved the outdoors. Worked for his dad.

Training In Military Training Camp at Fort Benjamin in 1940.
Became Private in Army Air Corps in 1941.

WWII Promoted to Corporal when transferred to Victorville airbase at the start of WWII. Earned his wings in 1943.

WWII Flew first combat mission in November 1943.
Got shot down on eighth mission over France. Returned to war and flew 56 more missions and shot down 11 German aircraft.

Post WWII In 1946 he attended a test pilot school in Ohio.
In 1947 he became the first man to go faster than the speed of sound. In 1956 he trained pilots for space programs.

Other In 1973 he was elected into the Aviation Hall of Fame.
In 1975 he retired from active duty, but worked as a test pilot for many years. In 1997 he broke the sound barrier again.

Achievements Overall he flew about 200 different aircraft and more than 14,000 flying hours.

Awards • The Purple Heart, • The Bronze Star with V device, • The Air Force Commendation medal, • The Silver Star with oak leaf cluster, • The Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, • The Distinguished Service Medal, • The Distinguished Flying Cross with two clusters, • Distinguished Unit Citation Emblem with one oak leaf cluster, • The Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, and • The Air Medal with ten clusters.
