Education Before even becoming an assistant, you must have a degree in –Textile technology –Textile science –Materials science of technology –Chemical or physical sciences –Production or manufacturing engineering Knowledge needed –Physics and chemistry –Understanding of computer technology –Good team working skills –Leadership skills –Manufacturing processes –Textile properties

Abilities/Duties Developing new synthetic fibers and fabrics Finding ways to improve look, feel and durability of fabrics Developing chemical processes and additives to improve performance Creating new color recipes for the dying process Programming new processes into computers for textile machines Overseeing the production process Testing fabrics and fibers, for example for strength or color fastness

Work Activities They are involved in all aspects of garment construction and are expected to keep up to date with technical innovations Minimize risk Support product development Develop supplier relationships (networking) Liaising with designers and adapting designs to suit production methods. Making and sizing pre production garments Responding to product queries, including complaints from wholesalers and customers

Salary/Availability Starting salaries can be between $20,00-$27,000. With experience this can rise to $44,000, and can go up from there. Normal working hours typically are 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday. Occasionally you may need to cover longer hours to meet deadlines. You'd be working in a office or lab, but are also likely to spend time on the factory floor
