The Impulsive-Antisocial Personality Factor in Pathological Gambling An Australian study by Steel & Blaszczynski (1998) aimed to replicate and expand the findings from previous studies that pathological gamblers manifest elevated traits of impulsivity, and to test the impulsivity-antisocial construct proposed by Blaszczynski et al. (1997).Steel & Blaszczynski (1998) Blaszczynski et al. (1997) Contributor© POSbase 2005

The Impulsive-Antisocial Personality Factor in Pathological Gambling Gamblers had significantly higher Impulsivity and Non-planning scores than the normative population. The Impulsivity scores were related to the severity of gambling behaviour as measured by the SOGS. © POSbase 2005 Demographic information and gambling history were also obtained. The gamblers’ scores on the psychological measures were compared to scores from normative populations.

The Impulsive-Antisocial Personality Factor in Pathological Gambling A principle component analysis was performed on the EIS and the PDQ- R, and revealed a three-factor solution with the Impulsive-Antisocial Personality Factor being the only factor to be positively associated with scores on the SOGS. © POSbase 2005

The Impulsive-Antisocial Personality Factor in Pathological Gambling This Impulsive-Antisocial Personality Factor comprised of high loadings on the EIS impulsivity and risk-taking scales, the cluster B personality disorders (antisocial, borderline, histrionic and narcissistic) and cluster C personality categories (dependent, avoidant and passive-aggressive). © POSbase 2005

The Impulsive-Antisocial Personality Factor in Pathological Gambling Next, scores on the Impulsive-Antisocial Personality Factor were compared on categorical predictors. © POSbase 2005 Scores were significantly higher for: Those who reported gambling in both horse-race betting and slot machine play than those who exclusively preferred one form. Those who reported drinking problems than those who did not. Those who reported a history of suicidal ideation than those who did not.

The Impulsive-Antisocial Personality Factor in Pathological Gambling The study supported the Impulsive-Antisocial Personality concept of gamblers identified by Blaszczynski, Steel, & McConaghy (1997) and fitted the Pathways Model of Gambling by Blaszczynski & Nower (2002).
