1  What was the Berlin Conference?  What did the countries meeting there want to do?  How did the Berlin Conference effect Africa? Include how these effects can be seen today.

6 3. Militarism: praise of nation’s large, strong army prepared to fight  Militarism made people feel patriotic  Each country had plans for mobilizing their army for battle

7  Alliance: formal agreement or treaty between two or more nations to cooperate for specific purposes  Created due to growing rivalries and mistrust among the Great Powers  Great Powers: Russia, Germany, France, Great Britain, Austria-Hungary  Started by Otto von Bismarck  Thinks France wants revenge after Franco-Prussian War loss

8  Wants to isolate France  Believes alliances with other countries would reduces France’s ability to attack  If France attacked Germany, they would have to fight Germany’s allies too  Germany signs treaties and creates alliances with Austria-Hungary, Italy, and Russia

9  1890: Otto von Bismarck forced to resign by Kaiser Wilhelm II  Kaiser: German emperor  Wilhelm II wants to show the world Germany’s strength  Allows treaty to lapse with Russia  Russia creates alliance with France

12  Balkan Peninsula contains many ethnic groups  Ex: Greeks, Slavs, Romanians, Serbians, Bulgarians  Long history of nationalist uprisings and ethnic fighting  Each group wants to create countries of their ethnicity  Most determined nation was Serbia

15  June 28,1914: Archduke Franz Ferdinand and wife, Sofie, visit capital of Bosnia (Sarajevo)  Went to show importance of Bosnia to Austria-Hungary  Franz Ferdinand: heir to Austria-Hungary Empire  Assassinated by Serbian nationalist  Shot and killed at point blank range in their car  Gavrilo Princip  July 28, 1914: Austria declares war on Serbia  Due to alliances, rest of Europe enters WWI
