1 Newton’s Third Law Action and Reaction

2 What is an interaction? Interactions occur when one object exerts a force on another object. The result is the second object exerts a force back on the first object.

3 What is Newton’s third law? Newton’s third law says that “for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”.

4 Forces come in pairs Action and reaction forces are always equal in opposite and act on different objects.

5 Why don’t action reaction forces cancel each other out? Action reaction forces don’t cancel each other out because they act on different objects. If your hand hits the wall, the reaction is the wall hits the hand.

6 Why does the force hurt your hand more than the wall? Even though the forces are equal the wall is solid and has more inertia. The damage is therefore greater to the hand than the wall. Just like the boat gets hurt worse than the pole.

7 What pushes rockets up? Rockets get pushed up by the reaction force of the exploding gases. The rocket pushes the gases down and the gases push the rocket up.

8 Name the reaction force Person’s foot pushes on sidewalk. Gun pushes bullet out. Earth pulls person down. Plane pushes air back. Jumper pushes ground down.
