Conventions

What are conventions? A convention is a rule that people agree to follow. In English, we follow several rules or conventions.

Conventions we use… Spelling- learn the rules for spelling. -Use a dictionary to help with the spelling of difficult words or new words. Capitalization- capitalize the first words in a sentence and each important word in proper nouns. Punctuation- Use the correct end marks, and use commas and quotation marks correctly.

Conventions we use… Make sure the verb you use matches or agrees with its subject. -He are going home should be He is going home. Verb tenses should match. Present tense verbs should be used throughout the piece. Make sure pronouns agree with the subject. -Tony and Tina are my friends. -They are my friends.

Conventions we use… Run- on sentences are too wordy! Correct them by using a period, a comma and a conjunction, or by using a semicolon. Lastly, use proofreading marks as you revise and edit your work!

Proofreading Symbols = Insert a letter, word, phrase or sentence. Ex: They raised flag.

Proofreading Symbols = Insert a comma Ex: They burried jewels rings, and coins.

Proofreading Symbols =Change a small letter to a capital letter. Ex: The ship docked at angel Island.

Proofreading Symbols = Change a capital letter to a small letter. Ex: The Map was stolen.

Proofreading Symbols =Take out a letter, word, phrase, or sentence. Ex: Calico Jack counted the the coins.
