9. Some basic syntax rules 1. Subjects and verbs MUST agree in number. My son picks his nose when he is bored. My sons pick their noses when they are bored. 2. Words and phrases between the noun and verb do not change the tense. My son, who is playing a computer game, picks his nose when he is bored.

10. Some basic syntax rules 3. Prepositional phrases between the subject and verb do not affect agreement. The boy on the swings picks his nose when he is bored. 4. Any sentence that starts with ‘there’ or ‘here’, the subject will always be after the verb. There is a problem with Turnitin.

11. Some basic syntax rules 5. If two subjects are joined by and, they typically require a plural verb. The cow and the pig are jumping over the moon. 6. The verb is singular if the two subjects separated by and refer to the same thing. Red beans and rice is my mom’s favourite dish.
