2 Teaching Tips It is important to establish good pronunciation when introducing new language. Exaggerate the nasal un by encouraging learners to hold their nose as they repeat this number. Ask them also to form the sound ‘oi’ at the front of their mouth – exaggerate your own mouth shape for this phoneme.

10 Phonics focus Six, dix – on their own x pronounced as ‘s’; in front of a word beginning with a consonant –x is silent eg six/dix bananes; in front of a word beginning with a vowel – x is pronounced as ‘z’ eg six/dix oranges on - onze ou - douze

11 Les jeux Feuille, papier, ciseaux - invite a volunteer to play a round of ‘Feuille, papier, ciseaux’ (Rock, paper, scissors) with you to practise un, deux, trois. Allow learners two or three minutes to play this game in pairs. Teaching Tip: This game is also called chi-fou- mi in French which is based on the Japanese words for 1, 2, 3 – hi, fu, mi.

12 Teaching Tips Teach learners how to respond to the question D’accord? - using thumbs up/down; replying with D’accord/Oui/Non to ensure they have understood the instructions for playing the game.

14 Les jeux Montrez-moi (Show Me) - Using digit cards or number fans, call out a number from 1 – 12. Learners look for the number and then hold it, number facing, to their chest. On the instruction Montrez-moi, they hold the number in the air. Play this game several times as a class. Learners then play the game with a partner.

15 Teaching Tips To ensure learners have a clear understanding of this game, model the commands Cherchez le deux. Masquez le! Et montrez moi? using mime and gesture. Ensure learners understand the importance of concealing the number, until they hear the instruction Montrez-moi. Choose those numbers which learners find most challenging e.g. 7 – 12.

How you can practise the new language Practise the new language and sounds using the PowerPoint hand out and recording Review the grammar points Play the games (in the car/shower/with friends and family) practising different commands What you can do with your class Introduce numbers 1 – 6 Play a game Ask children to say a number when answering the register Practise during the week when you have a spare couple of minutes Classroom routine Greet the class in French ‘Bonjour’ ‘Au revoir’ Ask them to respond to the register in French ‘Bonjour Madame…/Monsieur…
