Definition: A bildungsroman is a novel that traces the development of a character from childhood to adulthood, through a quest for identity that leads him or her to maturity. The term bildungsroman comes from the German term for "formation novel," or "education novel.“ Also Known As: education novel, formation novel, coming of age novel Warm Up: What vignette from The House on Mango Street is the best example of a bildungsroman?

TP-CASTT (an AP strategy for analyzing poetry) T itle: Make a prediction based on the title. P araphrase: Translate the poem into your own words. C onnotation: Look beyond the literal meaning of key words/images to their associations or underlying meaning. A ttitude: What is the speaker’s/author’s attitude toward the subject? S hift: Where do shifts in tone, speaker, setting, voice, etc., occur? What is the purpose of the shift(s)? T itle: Rexamine the title. What does the title mean now in the context of the poem? T heme: Think of the literal and metaphorical layers of the poem. Determine the theme. Express it in a complete sentence.
