Literacy and numeracy skills are essential to access the wider curriculum.
Literacy, numeracy, health and wellbeing enhance opportunities in life, learning and work.
Low literacy, numeracy skills are linked with social and economic disadvantage which in turn impacts negatively on health and well- being

3. What is numeracy?
“Being numerate involves developing a confidence and competence in using number that allows individuals to solve problems, interpret and analyse information, make informed decisions, function responsibly in everyday life and contribute effectively to society.”

Health is holistic and includes different dimensions - individual, societal, environmental and global. A holistic approach to health means taking account of separate influences and the interaction of different dimensions

It’s exciting times for Health Improvement with H&WB now a curricular area in its own right.
However, H&WB is not new – 5-14 Health education guidelines have been around for many years and there has been an enormous amount of good work under the HPS umbrella.
No-one is starting from scratch with H&WB
H&WB in CfE is about building on the good practice that has been done by health promoting schools
Partnerships are crucial to success
Therefore its very important that everyone in the partnership has a shared understanding of what we mean by ‘health’
This definition encapsulates the holistic nature of health in relation to the various dimensions that interact.
Health is more than just ‘not being ill, not needing to go to the GP’ – it is a resource for everyday living – the better our health, the better able we are to cope with whatever life throws at us.

9. Health and wellbeing across learning
Learning through health and wellbeing promotes confidence, independent thinking and positive attitudes and dispositions. Because of this, it is the responsibility of every teacher to contribute to learning and development in this area

Not only is H&WB a curricular area in its own right, it is also the responsibility of ALL STAFF

This may concern some staff, however, it is what good practitioners are already doing every day
Eg all staff will not be expected to deliver SRE/Substance misuse HOWEVER, they will be expected to contribute to :
Positive ethos
Respect and trust
Climate where C/YP (& staff) feel safe, secure and valued
Understand anti-bullying, anti-discriminatory & child protection policies and procedures
Make connections between H&WB Es and Os and learning and teaching in other areas of the curriculum.

10. Health and wellbeing across learning
Contributes to:
learning environments which support development of mental, emotional, social and physical health
young people’s learning and development through integrated links within the health and wellbeing curricular area
interdisciplinary learning and a broad general education
And is supported by:
a holistic, partnership approach to promoting the health and well being of children and young people, within social and community contexts.
