2.5 | Brainstorm Marketable Coverage

STEP 1 – LEARN As a class, discuss the survey results from earlier in the week. View this presentation to learn about how to make a book that everyone will rave about.

. SURVEY RESULTS Who are the people that are buying our yearbook traditionally? What do they like? Who is not buying our book? What don’t they like? How can we cover events and people so that the yearbook appeals to all grade levels and demographics within our school?

. CONSIDER THIS AD This is it. This is what matters. The experience of a product. How it makes someone feel. When you start by imagining What that might be like, You step back. You think. Who will this help? Will it make life better? Does this deserve to exist? Read the first two stanzas of this ad. What message do they convey to their consumers? How do the ideas apply to the work you are doing on the yearbook? Apple, Inc.

. MARKETABLE COVERAGE Your readers want to be included in the book. Your readers want to know what they are spending their money on. Your readers want a product that is high-quality, reflects their lives and feels different than last year. Theme can help you do all of this.

. REPEAT AND REFLECT Good themes inspire coverage in two ways: –Repetition (of theme words or synonyms) –Reflection (of the concept in angles of coverage) The key to product recognition lies in repeating and reflecting the concept and related ideas. –The theme should be repeated inside the book and reflected in our marketing.
