Baker Mid-year NSF/DOE Review of LHC Computing 2 Recent Tier 1 Progress Increased Staffing in FY 2002 Has Allowed Decreased Reliance on RHIC Computing Facility Hardware Deployment of More Scalable Hardware Meaningful Participation in Grid Testbed Activities Increased User Support FY 2001 Late Supplemental Funding Upgrades New FibreChannel RAID Disk Online – 1.6 TB, Easily Expandable to 14 TB New Cisco 6500 Switch Deployed – Expandable Capacity for at Least 3 Years HPSS, AFS Upgrades

Baker Mid-year NSF/DOE Review of LHC Computing 5 Facility Utilization Current Utilization Ongoing Simulations Most Notably, Neutron Backgrounds Additional Detector Studies – EM Calorimeter Response Data Challenges DC1 Phase 1 Certification (Nearly) Complete Approximately Half of Certification Data Produced at BNL Production Efficiency Has Been Higher at BNL Than Other Sites Phase 1 Production Will Start Soon Expect BNL to Produce Large Share of Phase 1 Output 1 TB to be Written to HPSS and Transferred to CERN Phase 2 Will Follow in FY ‘03 Expect BNL to Outperform Hardware Fraction (8%)

Baker Mid-year NSF/DOE Review of LHC Computing 7 PPDG Site AA Project Evaluate Interaction Between Grid and Site Security Models BNL, FNAL, SLAC, LBL and JLab Participating BNL Will Focus on User Account Management Virtual Organizations (VOs, Collaborations) Will Register Users Tier 1 Facilities “Must” Allow Access to All VO Members Many Administrative and Trust Issues Must be Addressed Some Tools Exist for VO Management BNL Will Develop Tools to Import VO Data and Manage Local Accounts
