2. HISTORY  Judaism began around 2000 BCE (before common era)  It is one of the oldest religions in the world  It occurred after Hinduism but before Sikhism, Islam, Christianity and Buddhism  The two main men associated with the finding of Judaism are Abraham and Moses  The Jews escaped Egypt and made their home in a country called Canaan (today we know it as Israel)  The Jewish people were ruled by kings and there were also prophets who acted as messengers, telling them what God wanted them to do

3. MODERN HISTORY AND TYPES  After the holocaust many thought Jews should have their own country to live in peace  However many people were already living in Israel (Arabs)  This resulted in a war between the Arabs and the Jews – there is still fighting continuing today!  Two types of Jews  Orthodox Jews “strict Jews” – they try and keep all traditional laws and literally follow the teachings of the Torah (holy book)  Progressive Jews – they do not keep all the laws as strictly and do not literally follow everything in the Torah

4. GODS  Jews only believe in one God  They have many names for their God but the main one they use is Adonai (“Lord”)

5. TRADITIONS  Rosh Hashanah- The Jewish new year. Occurs around September/October  Skkot - known as the harvest celebration. Lasts for 9 days in September/October.  Peseach – Last 7-8 days. Honours Jews from slavery. Late February to early march  Shavout - 2 days. Spring harvest festival in may/ June

6. BELIEFS  They believe that life is holy and shouldn’t be taken for granted  Torah(holy scripture) is the guide to correct living. Studying this is also a form of worship.  Community is very important. Group worship us essential as it gives them a sense of collective purpose and shared responsibility for each other.  They have belief in there is one true good who is an all powerful being.  Believe in the ten commandments

7. DIET  Only certain animals can be eaten.These animals are known as ruminant animals, meaning are mammals that are able to acquire nutrients from plant-based food through fermentation. An example of an animal is a cow, so therefore beef can be eaten. An example of an animal that doesnt is a pig, so pork cannot be eaten.  The animals that can be eaten must be slaughtered  Only certain parts of the animal can be eaten  All blood must be drained from the animal  Fruits and vegetables are allowed to be eaten but must be inspected for bugs.  Some food groups cannot be mixed, for example, meat cannot be mixed with dairy. Fish, eggs, fruits, vegetables and grains can be eaten with either meat or dairy. However, some views say that meat and fish should not be mixed.  Kitchen equipment that have come into contact with meat may not be used with dairy, and vice versa. Utensils that have come into contact with non-kosher food may not be used with kosher food. This applies only where the contact occurred while the food was hot.  Grape products made by non-Jews may not be eaten.
