HUMAN BIOLOGY Human organ systems interact to perform life functions that maintain homeostasis.
2
Digestive System How does the action of hydrochloric acid effect digestion in the stomach?
3
Answer Provides the proper pH for pepsin (enzyme) to work effectively
4
Circulatory System What is the function of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets?
5
Answer Plasma: transports blood cells, wastes, nutrients, antibodies, hormones, and enzymes. Red blood cells: carries oxygen to the body’s cells. White blood cells: fight infections. Platelets: involved in clotting of blood.
6
Circulatory System #2 Describe the transport of oxygen-poor blood from body cells to lungs.
7
Answer Oxygen-poor blood from the body returns to the right side of the heart through two large veins, it is then pumped to the lungs. Waste gases are removed and oxygen is picked up at the lungs.
8
Respiratory System How does the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide take place in alveoli?
9
Answer Capillaries surround each alveolus where oxygen (O 2 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) move by diffusion between the alveolus and the capillaries.
10
Urinary System What is the function of the nephron?
11
Answer Nephrons are small filtering units: some substances are forced out of blood into the nephrons and some substances are put back into the blood.
12
Nervous System Explain why the brain is called the control center of the nervous system.
