The National Zoo in Washington D.C. has received a grant to build a new exhibit. The grant money will allow the zoo to build a spacious habitat to house several members of a particular biome. You have been hired to educate visitors on the ecosystem of this population. It is your job to create a model of an exhibit for an animal from a particular biome and record a podcast informing visitors about the animal.

Job Description You will be given a biome to research and you will choose 2 animals from the biome to exhibit within the same habitat at the zoo. You will design and create an exhibit based on the animals’ needs and natural habitat. The exhibit must be safe for the animal and visitor. It must also enhance public viewing. Your team will create a podcast explaining the biome and habitat the animals live in and interactions it has with other organisms.

Questions So Far??? Materials Size of model Calendar Teams

You will be divided into teams and be assigned a biome to investigate. You will choose 1 animal from the following slides and another of your choice.

The Tropical Rainforest Biome Animals that are Available Scarlet Macaw Spider Monkey Emerald Tree Boa Tiger Gorilla

The Desert Biome Animals that are Available Frilled Lizard Sulcata Tortoise Scorpion Diamondback Rattlesnake Camel

The Grasslands Biome Animals that are Available Elephants Giraffes Black Rhinoceros Hippopotamus Lion

The Tundra Biome Animals that are Available Polar Bears Sea Lions Arctic Wolf Arctic Foxes Caribou

Questions to Consider… What part of the world does it come from? What habitat does it live in naturally? What are its food requirements? Is it a social or solitary animal? Do they need a rocky, flat-land, or arboreal environment? Do they need high humidity or low humidity? What construction materials do we use? We must use only non- toxic paints and natural materials. What items can we add to the exhibit to provide enrichment for the animal?

Safety Considerations How do we make the exhibit escape proof? How can we make the exhibit safe for the animal? How can we make the keepers safe while providing access to the exhibit Is there anything in the exhibit that can endanger the animal? Can toys or other enrichment items be used to damage the exhibit?
