Our Scope To define what food industry stakeholders want, or need, in terms of veterinary services and the ramifications for the veterinary profession in meeting these wants and to determine how effective engagement between the two can best be facilitated.

The NFU champions British farming and provides professional representation and services to its farmer and grower members Our information gathering Discussions with Waitrose, JS Sainsburys, Marks and Spencers, Asda & Morrisons. The IGD BMPA A few private veterinary surgeons A few veterinary undergraduates AHDB

The NFU champions British farming and provides professional representation and services to its farmer and grower members A few comments & observations No market model at the minute that allows vets to become truly self sustaining without reverting to a drug seller mentality. No evidence of failures in technical competence of Spanish vets (in food chain roles) – Job Preservation? Theres a lack of ownership of disease surveillance in the processor side…. vets dont seem interested.

The NFU champions British farming and provides professional representation and services to its farmer and grower members Our recommendations 1.Encourage early and continued recognition amongst veterinary students of the importance of the role of the vet in supplying high quality, safe and nutritious food. 2.Create a career development path for veterinary graduates which encourages the marriage of clinical knowledge with knowledge of the demands of the food supply chain, including food security and food safety.

The NFU champions British farming and provides professional representation and services to its farmer and grower members Our recommendations 3.Vets must engage more with the business of farming for food, helping their farmer clients attain profitable outcomes from their livestock and meet the demands of the market for high quality, safe food. 4.Vets must provide a link on farm between animal health and welfare and food safety.

The NFU champions British farming and provides professional representation and services to its farmer and grower members Our recommendations 5.Defra should facilitate a discussion between its various veterinary delivery agents (AHVLA, MHS) and the BVA to explore ways of linking the expertise and work of private large animal vets to those vets involved in post farm gate activities. 6.The BVA could facilitate better engagement of the veterinary profession with food industry.
