1. What are census microdata (samples)? 2. What do researchers use them for? http://bibliography.ipums.org http://bibliography.ipums.org 3. Who uses IPUMS-International samples? 4. How do researchers access the microdata? 7 tutorials: www.hist.umn.edu/~rmccaa/IPUMSI/ipumsi_explorer.ppt www.hist.umn.edu/~rmccaa/IPUMSI/ipumsi_explorer.ppt 5. How did IPUMS overcome the legal, administrative, technical obstacles to disseminate census microdata of 90+ countries? 6. Invitation to use microdata and cooperate with IPUMS-I. * Overview * Integrating census samples and metadata for research and policy: IPUMS-International
5
1. What are census microdata? Individual responses to a census. Each line on this form is one person’s microdata record.
6
1. Universal population coverage 2. High precision, confidentialized samples—most drawn to IPUMS-International specifications 3. Samples—microdata and metadata—are integrated: identical concepts have the same codes in all samples 3. Samples—microdata and metadata—are integrated: identical concepts have the same codes in all samples 4. Facilitate expert analysis of: Fertility and mortality levels: own-child methods, births and deaths in the household in the past 12 months. Fertility and mortality levels: own-child methods, births and deaths in the household in the past 12 months. Disability and access to health care. Disability and access to health care. Household sanitation variables (water supply, toilet, and sewage facilities), Millennium Development Goals Employment, Education, etc. Employment, Education, etc. IPUMS-International: Samples (see card handout)
7
Currently available: 325 million integrated person records in 159 samples, representing 55 countries Annually, samples for 6-8 countries are integrated into the IPUMS-International database. Samples for 2010 round censuses are integrated as they become available Hundred of variables are integrated: Demography Education Employment Disability Dwelling IPUMS-International: Census samples for research and policy making

2. What are census samples used for? see http://bibliography.ipums.org

Research Topics—amazingly diverse » Economists: » Comparative study of labor force participation » Demand and supply of public services (water, electricity, sewage, etc.) » Economic impact of family planning and fertility decline » Brain drain, brain gain » Discrimination in credit markets » Econometric analysis of labor force and income » Effect of long-term youth unemployment » Effects of volume of human capital on returns to education » Human capital and aging » Impact of trade policies on growth, development, immigration, labor markets, and inequality » Etc.

3. Who uses IPUMS-International samples? See sample card for researcher’s country of residence www.hist.umn.edu/~rmccaa/IPUMSI click “usage stats”

Complement one own’s surveys with population data from IPUMS-International Complement Demographic and Health Surveys or malaria- treatment data The purpose of IPUMS is to facilitate ready access to unit record data for analysis—NOT TO REPLACE OTHER DATA! IPUMS-International: Unit record data for social science and health research and teaching

1. Free, easy access to data for many countries and censuses 2. Large sample sizes: Make it possible to include many different variables in a regression… multi-level model… Make it possible to include many different variables in a regression… multi-level model… Produce separate estimates for population sub-groups Produce separate estimates for population sub-groups Easy to extract samples with a target sample size (e.g., 50mb) Easy to extract samples with a target sample size (e.g., 50mb) Easy to revise an extract for a larger size or to include more countries, censuses, variables or sub-populations Easy to revise an extract for a larger size or to include more countries, censuses, variables or sub-populations 2. Students show a great deal of creativity in using IPUMS-I 3. Skills acquired have an immediate pay-off when applying for jobs (e.g., World Bank), graduate school, etc. “IPUMS-I is an excellent resource for teaching…” -- David Lam, president-elect Pop. Assoc. Amer.

4. How do researchers access the data? www.ipums.org/international www.ipums.org/international 1. Register 2. Create an extract 3. Download extract 4. Analyze with SAS, STATA, SPSS, R, etc.
15
User registration, conditions of use license View variables (integrated metadata) Link to Official Statistical Agency home pages View sample descriptions (integrated metadata) Get data: create a custom-tailored extract: select countries, years, sub-populations, & variables Bibliography: add yours; view others IPUMS web-sites are “event-driven”. Surf the site (explore in any order)
16
First, click here to explore the IPUMS-International website--or www.ipums.org and click international. click here www.ipums.orgclick here www.ipums.org Then click a highlighted word for instructions on any of the 7 tutorials below: Register: to access microdata Register Explore metadata: samples, variables, and sources samplesvariablessourcessamplesvariablessources Get data: create custom-tailored extracts Get data Get data Download data and codebooks Download data Download data Study Indian emigrants using IPUMS Study Indian emigrants Study Indian emigrants 7 tutorials on using the IPUMS-International web-site to obtain census documentation and person records https://international.ipums.org/international https://international.ipums.org/international www.hist.umn.edu/~rmccaa/IPUMSI/ipumsi_explorer.ppt
17
Use the extract system to “Select Cases”. Example: Disability
18
First, explore the metadata: variable definition, comparability discussion, etc.
19
Continue to explore the metadata: comparability for specific countries
21
Continue to explore the metadata: codes and case counts for every sample selected
22
Second: Click the box to include the variable Third: Click “select cases” box
23
Click here, to select every person in households containing an individual with employment disability Fourth: Scroll down, select “disabled”, then “Continue to next step”
24
1. Legal: negotiate uniform Memorandum of Understanding with each partner 2. Administrative: hold each user and each user’s institution responsible for enforcing conditions of use 3. Technical—uniform procedures: Draw samples: every 10 th household Draw samples: every 10 th household Confidentialize: best practice Confidentialize: best practice Integrate: both metadata and microdata Integrate: both metadata and microdata Disseminate: world-wide, free of charge Disseminate: world-wide, free of charge 5.
