India Basics India is located in South Asia. 1/3 the size of U.S.A. 2 nd largest population in the world – 1.2 billion people – 4 X U.S. population Population is growing rapidly and India is expected to be the largest by 2025.

Growth of Cities in India Approx. 72% are rural; 28% urban…however this is shifting. People are moving from rural to urban areas in search of jobs. 43 cities with over 1 million people – 9 in the U.S. 11 over 3 million – 2 in the U.S. 2 over 10 million (Mumbai and Delhi) – 0 in the U.S.

How does a population grow? High birth rate (average person is having multiple children) Low death rate due to better medical technology (more children survive at birth, people live longer) Population declines when more people are dying than being born.

Impact of Population Growth Cities are crowded, dirty, high rates of poverty – Slums form India becomes a large consumer and requires resources – What if we need the same resources? Large labor force (people willing to work) – American companies may choose to re-locate to India and pay workers less (outsourcing) – Large middle class begins to form
