My freshman year doesn’t count. I’m picking this class because my friend is taking it. I’ll just skip this class. One day won’t make a difference I don’t need to write down that assignment. I’ll remember it. My homework is late…I’ll just forget about it.

Sorry, I can’t join that club, I have to study all the time. Everyone else in class understood what the teacher just said except me, so I won’t ask him to explain it. I don’t want to talk to the teacher about the problems I’m having with her class. I’m having a problem at school…my friends are helping me I really don’t need that much sleep.

Get involved at school. Make sure your student is in school every day and ready to learn. Look at their work. Set expectations and rules for completion of work and studying. Encourage A’s and B’s—know what’s going on. READ, READ, READ! Talk to your child about interests, abilities, goals and careers. Take your child to visit a college. Find our what courses your child needs. Attend college fairs and workshops. Start saving for college now.
