2 What is service learning? Service learning has been defined as a “credit‐bearing, educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.” http://cesr.ua.edu/

3 Our service: Video projects Our groups will create videos aimed at target audience – Possibilities: middle school, high school, or college students; parents of students a particular age; or the public. – Minimum length: 6 – 9 minutes The idea is to get them thinking and learning about legal and ethical issues related to their use of computers and other technology. We’ll incorporate our work into the CS 340 website Right Clicks

5 Suggested Topics: I need high quality videos on: Cyberbullying What is plagiarism, and how to avoid problems.* Texting and driving A parent’s guide to Facebook A teen guide to Facebook Hackers Online safety (a.k.a. stranger danger) Best of the web (resources for your target group) Illegal downloading* These topics have been well covered, but a fresh take would be welcome: Facebook “dumb moves” Privacy implic. of social media Dangers of location services Defamation Sexting Your own ideas are welcome!!! Don’t be afraid to choose something not on the list

6 Video Methods How do you want tell your story or present your information? – Documentary – Skit: traditional story, characters playing roles, saying lines – News broadcast Possible elements: parody, interviews, comics, stop motion, group created music/songs
