Unit 1 Lesson 3 Climate and Resources
How would you describe the climate and natural resources of New Jersey?
2
Vocabulary Climate: the kind of weather a place has over a long period of time. Precipitation: water that falls to Earth’s surface as rain, sleet, hail, or snow. Nor-Easter: strong storms that bring high winds, heavy snows, and freezing cold.

Vocabulary Natural resources: something found in nature that people can use. Renewable: resource that can be reused or replaced. Nonrenewable: cannot be made again. Manufacturing: making goods from natural resources.
4
New Jersey’s Climate Seasonal Climate
Summer: hot and humid Winter: cold with precipitation Spring: warm and rainy Fall: cool and dry Occasional extreme weather like nor’easters
5
New Jersey’s Climate Location Affects Climate
Northwestern NJ is the coldest area Higher elevations Southeastern NJ is the warmest area Milder along the Atlantic Ocean Ocean brings cool breezes in the summer, warm air in the winter
6
Natural Resources Natural Resources Found in nature
People can use them Living Ex: animals and plants Nonliving Ex: minerals and sand Renewable Ex: trees Nonrenewable Ex: minerals
7
Natural Resources New Jersey’s Natural Resources
Garden State: plentiful harvests of fruit and vegetables Inner Coastal Plain and Piedmont Regions: early settlers chose to farm here Atlantic coast, Hudson River, and Delaware River: early settlers chose to fish here Mineral rich hills and mountains of northwestern NJ: settler came to mine here
8
Natural Resources Using the Land Farming
Late 1800s, NJ supplied NY and PA with fresh fruits and vegetables Still happens today Farming Climate and rich soil 9,000+ farms in NJ Most are small (9-50 acres) Southwestern Region: 40,000 acres of vegetable farms Southeastern Region: cranberries and blueberries
9
Natural Resources Farms Cows Livestock Farms Horse Farms
Milk, butter, dairy products Livestock Farms Cows, pigs, and chickens Horse Farms Monmouth County Racing and riding
10
Other Resources Fishing Take tourists on trips Fish Saltwater
Flounder, tune, whiting, crabs Freshwater Trout, bass, catfish
11
Other Resources Mining
Minerals found underground and other Earth’s surface Underground mines are now closed All mining is done on the surface Rock is mined and crushed to make: Roads, bridges, and buildings Hills and mountains are mined for: Iron, copper, zinc and other hard minerals
12
Manufacturing Making good from natural resources
Ex: making glass from sand New Jersey is a leading manufacturer of: Plastics, rubber, and machinery Chemicals, medicines, and printed materials (books and magazines)
