Technology Integration  From Technology lab to Classroom Integration

Holy Family Catholic Schools  Barb Roling  Principal, St. Columbkille School  Todd Wessels  Director of Curriculum, Technology and Instructional Personnel Holy Family Catholic Schools

About Us  Holy Family Catholic Schools (1996 students)  Formed in 2001  4 Elementary Schools  Our Lady of Guadalupe Spanish Immersion Program  Mazzuchelli Catholic Middle School  Wahlert High School

Today’s Agenda  Holy Family Technology Mission Statement  Our plan and planning process  Infrastructure / Support Necessary  St. Columbkille’s Implementation  Next Steps  Questions/Comments/ Discussion

Technology Mission Statement  The Holy Family Catholic Schools mission for technology is to provide an integrated, evolving tool and resource that facilitates thinking, creativity, communication and problem solving for all students, faculty and staff.

Technology Planning  An ongoing process

Goals of the Technology Plan 1. Fully train faculty and staff in equipment use and curriculum integration 2. Strategically develop student skills using technology as a tool for learning 3. Using technology as a tool; integrated technology in the curriculum aligned with the Holy Family Catholic Schools Curriculum standards and Grade Level Expectations. 4. Implementing software for a variety of purposes; to manage records, reports, products, etc.; to educate students and to facilitate staff communications and networking. 5. Provide on-going system fiscal and technical support. 6. Communication with stakeholders

Goals for system teachers and students 1. Use equipment appropriately 2. Demonstrate application knowledge to extend learning or work opportunities 3. Curriculum integration, using technology to understand content, synthesize or analyze concepts, demonstrate knowledge or produce work. 4. Increase Student Achievement 5. Alignment with National Educational Technology Standards - Students 2007 (NET-S) 6. Alignment with National Educational Technology Standards - Teachers 2008 (NET-T)

Hardware Goals 1. Equip each teacher with a laptop computer to help facilitate the integration of technology into the curriculum. 2. Move from lab based technology to classroom based technology. Utilizing laptop carts at the k-5 and middle school level and 1 to 1 implementation at the high school level. 3. Create a infrastructure that supports a mobile learning environment 4. Provide a network of technical support and curriculum integration support to teachers

Infrastructure / Support  Network operations centralized  Fiber Ring - with central hub at Wahlert  Enterprise Level Wireless implementation  Support Staff

Technology Integration St. Columbkille School

Getting Started  Initial donation allowed for the purchase of teacher computers and 3 full carts  Initially teachers saw the lab as coming to the classroom  Technology coordinator would team teach with teachers

Initial Professional Development  Received laptops in the spring  1-on-1 training with each teacher  2 days of paid training at end of school year, including 1 Apple training day  Teachers had summer to continue to get familiar with laptop

Teacher Expectations-Year 1  Learn something new with technology each quarter  Grade level partners worked together  Start with comfort level and work up to using laptops with students  Was not tied to Career Development Plan

How We Did-Year 1  Teachers did get comfortable using their laptops  Technology was still separate class  Some teachers used the laptops in the classroom on a regular basis

School Changes  Multiple Catholic Schools in our system consolidated  The increased enrollment at St. Columbkille meant there was no room for a computer lab  Opportunity to try something new with the technology

Schedule Changes  Flexible schedule  Technology integrated into curriculum  Focus on using technology as a tool  Teachers learning with students  Team meetings-meet each week to discuss technology integration

Continued Professional Development  Offered initial training for staff new to the laptops at the end of the school year  More in-service times designated to train teachers on different technology programs- school and system wide  Teachers learning in the classroom with the students  Team meetings-offer time for teachers to learn technology

Teacher Expectations  Career Development Plans focus on integrating technology  Set quarterly goals for using technology on their own and with students  Learn to use the Mimio (Smartboard) to enhance their teaching

What We Learned Years 1,2 & 3  Start with the teachers-get laptops in their hands first  Training-teachers need lots of opportunities to learn the technology  Teachers need support  Teachers need time to plan together

Current Structure  No lab  Carts checked out, wheeled into classroom  Common Planning Time  Weekly, including principal and/or technology integration coordinator  Technology Coordinator teams with teachers  Weekly meet with technology coordinator

Technology Schedule  Flexible class times  Length  Frequency  Student use  Projects Teachers facilitate without tech coordinator  Individual work Completion of projects Reinforcement Extension

Professional Development  Content oriented  Tool for learning and sharing learning  Expectations  Integrate  Team plan  Improve your skills

Ongoing Professional Development  Pacing Meetings  Morning Staff Meeting Sharing  System Opportunities  Common planning Times  Career Development Plans

Technology Integration Coordinator  Strong teacher  Flexible  Working with students  Life-long learner  Good communicator

Celebrate!  Provide time to share during meetings  Curriculum Showcase  Invite parents in for presentations

Our Next Steps

Elementary  Eliminate fixed labs at all sites  Replace computer teachers with:  Technology Integration Specialists  Use technology as a tool to improve instruction

Mazzuchelli Catholic Middle School  Classroom based technology instruction  Tradition technology curriculum  Classroom integration

Wahlert Catholic High School  Explore different options and models for one-to- one implementation

System Next Steps  Restructure IT Department  System wide enterprise wireless  Faculty Staff web-presence  Professional Development
