Agenda Your child brings it home every night. Your child needs to bring it to school everyday. This is used to: –Communicate between parents & teachers. Tell your child if you write a note. –Transportation change –Record assignments – weekly specials, homework & tests

HERO Folder This will go home every day. Please remove your child’s: –Graded work –Graded tests –Newsletters (if not emailed) –Important notes Please return homework and signed papers in the HERO folder each day. Please do not throw any papers away without asking your child first if they are important!

Behavior Plan Rewards: Individual Behavior – earn 15 stickers and receive an award Class Tallies – earn 5 tallies and receive a Hero sticker Consequences: Clip board: Mrs. May, Mrs. Smith, & Special Area teachers 0-1 ‘oops’ receives a S 2+ ‘oops’ receives a N - behavior note known as ‘The Slip’ is stapled to the agenda to be signed, completed by the child and returned the day! We do not record conduct grades in the agenda

Homework Reading Read at least 100 minutes each week and complete the reading responses. Due on Friday. Library books sleep in the book bags. WE USE THEM IN CLASS everyday! Log on website! Spelling Test every Friday using Spelling City Homework is to learn the words!!! Begins Aug. 24…list of words on website! Math Check your child’s folder Practice math facts. Homework checks on facts will begin this Friday. Start practicing multiplication now…check website for practice Science and Social Studies Study Guides t

Grading Report cards are sent every nine weeks. Progress reports at mid-term. Look at PowerSchool - Call the office if you need assistance. Children are graded based on: –Formative (classwork) 55% –Summative (assessments) 40% –Homework 5%

Reading Reader’s Workshop & Book Clubs Students read material on their level, most of the time. Students can choose books based on their individual reading level and their interest. Student comprehension moves beyond recall and fact retelling. Thinking as a reader by: making connections, inferring, asking questions, making predictions, etc. Goals-to become a life long lover of reading! Lexile- All children need to read >650 Lexile by the end of 3 rd grade

Language Arts Writing - Types of writing: narrative, informational, and opinion Your child will work through the Writing Process with each piece: prewriting, first draft, revising, editing Traits of Writing: ideas, organization, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, and conventions My main focus is ideas and details!!! Grammar – LARS; incorporated into daily writings Spelling – patterned words and high frequency words *Mastery of spelling is seen in daily writings!!!

Math Math Centers/Small Groups Units: * Number Sense: Place Value & Rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and 100, Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division * Data and Graphing * Fractions * Measurement * Geometry * Problem Solving

Social Studies & Science Social Studies: Map Skills, Ancient Greece, Historical People (9), Government, and Economics Science: Rocks and Minerals, Changes to Earth’s land, Magnetism, Heat and Energy, Habitats of Georgia, Adaptations of Living Things, Preserving Ecosystems Tests after every unit Study guides will be sent home a few days before every test. Students must study to be successful. Resources will be included on the website.

As a Parent I agree to… Be an active participant attending Open House, Curriculum Night, Parent Teacher Conferences, and other events throughout the school year. Be a supportive parent by having my child read at least 20 minutes five nights each week to help increase their Lexile reading level, by assisting with homework completion, and reviewing school communication nightly. As a Teacher I agree to... Be an active participant by regularly updating PowerSchool and classroom websites, scheduling parent- teacher conferences twice a year, and consistently communicating through phone calls, email and newsletters. Be a supportive teacher by providing research based differentiated instruction that helps to ensure students can achieve their Reading Lexile goals. As a Student I agree to... Be an active participant by cooperating in classroom activities, asking questions when I do not understand, and completing classroom assignments. Be a responsible student by reading at least 20 minutes five nights a week, completing my homework, studying for tests, and reviewing school communication with my parents. Did you know that Buford Academy is a Title 1 school? We are always looking to make our school better. We need your input for Title Funds. Mrs. Pulley is open for suggestions on ways to best use Title funds to meet the needs of all students. Ways we currently use Title funds are: Technology, Paraprofessionals, Summer School, After School/Saturday School, and Professional Development for teachers.

Attendance *Improving attendance, tardies and checkouts is a school improvement goal of Buford Academy. *A written excuse within 2 days of the absence must be sent. *Absences of 10 or more days in a school year will result in contact from the school counselor or system social worker. *Students should not be checked out from 2:50-3:10 pm *Students with perfect attendance each quarter are eligible for a reward.
