2
Concentration is a ratio of the amount of solute in a solution. Key Point!
3
Breakdown the Definition... Ratio – A comparison expressed as a fraction. Solute – The substance that dissolves to form a solution. Solution - a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. A solution can be in any of the states of matter. Solvent - A substance that dissolves other substances, thus forming a solution.
4
Concentration = Amount of Solute Amount of Solution
5
1.Percent concentration a) Percent by mass b) Percent by volume 2. Parts per million 3. Parts per billion 4. Molarity 5. Solubility Curve
6
How do you figure out your mark on a test when you know the number of marks you got out of a certain number? The same kind of calculation can be made for the next two types of concentrations we will study Percentage Mark = Your Mark x 100 Total Marks

Pages 481 - 482 of textSee formulas on board Percent by Mass A ratio relating the mass of solute to the mass of solution. Used when discussing both solid solutions and liquid solutions. Percent by Volume A ratio relating the volume of solute to the volume of solution. Often used for liquor proofs on bottles and some commercial cleaners.
