Orthopedic Adaptor Kate Huddleston Anna Duloy Alexander Byall Ashley Goodnight

Project Background 300,000 total knee arthroplasties per year Total knee arthroplasty = total knee replacement major complications of total knee arthroplasty: –Loosening of joints –Osteolysis –Periprosthetic femoral fractures

Challenges Fractures around knee implants pose unique fixation challenges Long-term presence of prosthesis may change the structure of the bone leading to increase susceptibility to fracture The original placement of the knee implant The prosthetic joint may interfere with healing Age of patient Little bone left to work with

Knee Replacement Components

Project Definition We are designing an adaptor that will connect the nail inserted into the shaft of the femur to the knee prosthesis

Design Specifications Holding the nail 5 degrees relative to the prosthetic joint Attach nail to prosthesis Maintain rigid structure Irremovable knee prosthesis Little bone to work with

Current Status NCIIA Proposal, Web Page Design Background research - biomechanics of the knee - design of nail and prosthesis Brainstorming and Idea Generation - Ball bearings - Umbrella -Turn and lock

Future Work Analyze possible connecting methods between nail and adaptor Continue idea generation and brainstorming Discuss ideas with advisors
