Rhetoric SL 12.3 – Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric.

On your paper… First and last name at the top, today’s date & period Copy the following definition of RHETORIC: – A. the study and practice of effective communication. – B. the study of the effects of texts on audiences. – C. the art of persuasion. – D. A pejorative term for insincere eloquence intended to win points and manipulate others. Write the word OPPORTUNITY, then skip ten lines Write the word BEING SEXY, then skip ten lines Write the phrase LIVING LIFE What do these mean to you? Write a few sentences that express your thoughts on these ideas. Turn to someone near you and discuss your thoughts on all three ideas.

To reiterate, we’ll watch it again. This time, add some notes to what you’ve written about the ideas he talks about. After this viewing, we will have a discussion about the ideas he puts forth and the ideas all of you have on the same subjects. Guidelines for accountable discussion You have a right to 1.Make a contribution to an attentive, responsive audience (look at the speaker while the speaker is speaking). 2.Ask questions that clarify and advance your understanding. 3.Be treated civilly. 4.Have your ideas discussed. You are OBLIGATED to 1.Speak, so that everyone can hear. 2.Speak one at a time. 3.Listen for understanding. 4.Agree or disagree (and explain why) in response to other people’s ideas. 5.Critique ideas, NOT people.
